Sure Start was agreed by all parties to be a great step forward in helping vulnerable children to the best possible start in life, especially given that there was very little support available before its introduction. Now, as we learn that 1000 Sure Start centres have closed since 2010 under the weight of budget cuts, what is the future for such children?

As Frank Cottrell Boyce says, political persuasions don’t really come into it. Instead, “this is a story about who we are – all of us, left and right – and what kind of nation we are becoming”.
