Hard evidence: at what age are children ready for school?

The debate around the age at which children are ‘ready’ for school has been long and hard-fought. Just when should children move from play-based activities to more formal learning? In the UK, successive governments have embraced the idea that earlier is better, with children entering into reception classes at the age of four.

“But the evidence from international comparisons and psychological research of young children’s development all points to the advantages of a later start to formal instruction, particularly in relation to literacy.”
