Obese women more likely to have babies with serious birth defects, says study

A major study in Sweden, which used data from 1.2 million live births, has produced compelling evidence of a link between obesity at conception and serious birth defects. It has also shown that the babies of women who are overweight are more likely to suffer health problems than those of women who are a normal weight.

“The research revealed a sliding scale of risk for health problems including congenital heart defects, anomalies of the digestive system and malformations of genital organs or limbs.”
