Sharp rise under-11s referred for mental health help

A new report from the NSPCC indicates that there has been a large increase in the number of primary school children referred for specialist help since 2014-2015. The total number of school referrals was 123,713, but more than half were for children under 11. The youngest child to be referred was 3.

The NSPCC’s Chief Executive, Peter Wanless, said: “Our research shows schools are increasingly referring children for specialist mental health treatment, often when the child is at crisis point.”
