Shocking figures show HUGE leap in self-harm by children as young as FIVE

According to provisional NHS figures, 1,078 children under 12 attended hospital in the past year after self-harming by cutting, burning and poisoning. Specialists in child mental health say that low self-esteem, social media and exam pressures are leading to feelings of depression and anxiety, which in turn are causing increasing numbers of children to self-harm. The largest increases are among young girls.

Tom Madders of the mental health charity, YoungMinds, says: “Far too many children don’t get help when they first need it, and problems can get worse during the long wait for specialist treatment.”
