Is social media causing childhood depression?

A number of recent studies are linking mental health problems in children to the use of social media, with many feelings of inadequacy and anxiety being expressed by children surveyed. In one study, Shirley Cramer, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Public Health, concludes: “Social media has become a space in which we form and build relationships, shape self-identity, express ourselves and learn about the world around us; it is intrinsically linked to mental health”.

Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Louise Theodosiou, reports on children who have stopped going out: “These kids are living in a fictional world, sometimes to the detriment of their physical health. They might have physical ill-health, like toothache, but they are still not wanting to leave their virtual worlds.”
