In the wake of the Manchester bombing, and with the in-depth, prime time news coverage set to continue for a few more days, how do we talk to our children about what has happened – or do we try to shield them from it? The advice from professionals is to talk about it rather than to shy away, but that presents its own problems. How do we do that without frightening them?

“Give children basic facts, tell them what it is they want to know, ask them what they would like to know and then give them access to that,” says consultant clinical psychologist, Emma Citron.
