To foster a love of art in children, we must teach it at primary school

For some considerable time now, creative subjects have been increasingly marginalised in many schools, and the number of pupils taking art subjects at GCSE level is falling. With more and more demands being made on the curriculum, schools find it difficult to fit in even an hour a week of art. Yet, primary art specialist, Emily Gopaul argues, “the arts matter, not only to individual learning but to the UK as a whole: the creative industries currently contribute £84.1bn a year to the economy”. Moreover, “enthusiasm for art should really start at primary school”.
