Too much technology: children growing up with weak hands, fingers

British pediatric doctors are reporting that children are starting school with a decreased ability to use scissors, hold a pencil and perform other tasks that have been within their scope up until now.  They are blaming the overuse of smartphones and tablets and the lack of traditional activities such as stringing beads, colouring and other pastimes that require a degree of dexterity.

“Children coming into school are being given a pencil but are increasingly not be able to hold it because they don’t have the fundamental movement skills,” says Sally Payne, PhD, the head pediatric occupational therapist with the Heart of England foundation NHS Trust.
