Why understanding how a child’s brain works at different ages is so important

Parenting is a difficult job, so the more we understand our growing children the better we are able to respond appropriately to their needs. Part of this is understanding how children’s brains work at different ages, and how the way their brains change can influence behaviour.

An example, according to Sarah Lytle of the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences at the University of Washington, is that “while we typically underestimate babies’ ability to understand and communicate before they begin speaking, we tend to overestimate the brain power of walking, talking toddlers”.
