Young at heart: why children who exercise become healthier adults

Record numbers of children are overweight and clinically obese, yet the amount of physical activity adults and children are involved in is lessening radically, particularly in the UK. More and more research from across the world shows that regular exercise in childhood has a beneficial, protective effect upon health in later years.

“Studies show that doing enough physical activity to improve cardiorespiratory fitness in childhood is directly related to the structure and function of the developing brain, especially regions such as the hippocampus, which is involved in memory, and the prefrontal cortex, which does not complete its formation until your early 20s.”
